Sergio A. Barboza born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was 7 years old when he moved to Canada in 1970. His father encouraged his family to maintain their traditions, moreover he taught Sergio the basis of Candombe drumming, key element of Afrouruguayan culture.
In 1976 his parents, members of Club Uruguay Toronto, cofounded the first Candombe group in Canada “Candombe Uruguayo”. The group had over 40 performers representing all the characters of a Candombe troupe… Sergio was one of the original 10 drummers.
Throughout the years he travelled to Uruguay to participate in Candombe festivals and learn more about its history.
In 1999 directed Candombe Uruguayo at a carnival performance, that featured, for the first time in Canada, original music and lyrics written by local artists.
In 2002 founded Magia Negra (Black Magic), a modern and ground breaking Candombe group, that fused traditional Candombe sounds with Jazz and other Afro-American rhythms. His groups have performed for thousands of audiences throughout North America.
Halton Peel Hispanic Association (HPHA) invites you to join us for our first music event of the year "Encounter with the culture" ("Encuentros con la cultura"). Enjoy a discussion and performance by
