ENCOUNTER WITH THE CULTURE PRESENTED: SERGIO A. BARBOZA in "Candombe –The Magic of the Drum"

The Magic of the Drum was a great success with over 100 people attended the event on Friday March 23rd and enjoyed Candombe music by Sergio Barboza.

Sergio A. Barboza born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was 7 years old when he moved to Canada in 1970. His father encouraged his family to maintain their traditions, moreover he taught Sergio the basis of Candombe drumming, key element of Afrouruguayan culture.

In 1976 his parents, members of Club Uruguay Toronto, co-founded the first Candombe group in Canada “Candombe Uruguayo”. The group had over 40 performers representing all the characters of a Candombe troupe… Sergio was one of the original 10 drummers. Throughout the years he traveled to Uruguay to participate in Candombe festivals and learn more about its history.

In 1999 directed Candombe Uruguayo at a carnival performance, that featured, for the first time in Canada, original music and lyrics written by local artists.

In 2002 founded Magia Negra (Black Magic), a modern and ground breaking Candombe group, that fused traditional Candombe sounds with Jazz and other Afro-American rhythms. His groups have performed for thousands of audiences throughout North America. Halton Peel Hispanic Association (HPHA) invites you to join us for our first music event of the year "Encounter with the culture" ("Encuentros con la cultura").

Tony  'Marinus' Vander Voet CHILE IMPRESSION

Tony Maninus Vander Voet“I paint for the sheer joy of painting. The living colours, lines and shapes give each work a separate existence. The act of painting is a conversation between the art and me. The final painting serves as a record of that conversation.”

Tony's work is strongly influenced by his love of stain glass; his pastels and paintings are often characterized by bold lines and bright colours. Tony is also interested in fabric arts, and has exhibited embroidered drawings, paintings and tapestries.  His work can be found in private collections in Canada, Germany and Chile.

Largely  self-taught, Tony has studied drawing and painting with a number of well known artists at both the Haliburton School of the Arts and Toronto School of Art, including Harold Klunder, John  Leonard, V. Jane Gordon, Peter Kolisnky, Joanna Nash,  Brian Smith and pastel artist Ursula Reese. He has studied printmaking with Otis Tamasauskas, Moira Clark and Stephanie Rayner.
Tony is a Master Pastellist with the Pastel Artist .ca (2010), member of Colour and Form Society since 2005 and Beaux-Arts Brampton since 2006.

“I sign my work as ‘Marinus’ because it is one of my middle names, and partly because it is my mother’s maiden name, and I wanted to honour that side of my family. Also I was a scientist and public servant by profession and have published in the scientific literature. It is Anthony (or Tony) Vander Voet who appears as the scientist and public official; ‘Marinus’represents the art side”.
Since 2002, Tony's work (painting, print and photography) has been accepted  in numerous juried shows  in Toronto, Brampton, Orangeville and Brantford.

He has exhibited in a number of occasions with his wife, Susan Mccrae, also a painter and print maker.
